It sure does not take long for some plants to realize that spring is on its way. Now that the days are starting to lengthen again, some members of our farm family just can’t wait. It’s a little risky as we may still get a hard frost but these little guys are made of courage and so they boldly go where no other buds dare to go.
As we face another six to eight weeks of mostly rainy and overcast weather, with the sun remaining low in the southern sky, it lifts the spirits to walk around our Town Lot Farm and see the excitement building all around us.
Gertrude is our legacy peach plum tree. We grafted a lot of prune plums into her crown before we learned to really appreciate her value. Her peach plums bloom and ripen about two weeks before the prune plums and we now use them to make compote for our smoothies and a wonderfully tart juice that replaces our need to buy orange juice for our Müsli. She is budding already.
Once we realized how amazingly useful her plums are, we decided to spread her love to two other prune plum trees. And as you can see in the second picture, they are budding as well. The tree this graft is on turns out to be what we’ve dubbed an “early blue”. It feels like a cross between the peach plum and a Stanly prune plum.
The last three pics are of our roses, Camilla our Camellia, and last year’s primula that are smiling from pedal to pedal.
