Spring waits for no one and although we are still doing our best to complete our winter projects, life is literally bursting at the seams all around our Town Lot Farm – luring us outside to play with our botanical siblings.
Camilla is full of buds but becasue of the near freezing nights, she only dares open one or two blossoms at a time just yet. In another week she will likely be in full bloom. We know that the warm weather is coming as the queen bumble bees have emerged from their hibernation in the Comfrey and are busy scouting for a nook to build their colonies.
Gertrude, our peach plum tree, has been in full bloom for over a week now and our hopes are high for good pollination and a bumper crop after her rest last year. We have grafted her beauty on to two other trees on the farm just to spread it around. And we have at least three potted plums with successful grafts of this amazing fruit.
Our many prune plum trees are also starting to wake up. Their buds are swelling and just barely showing the majestic green that will overtake them soon. They usually bloom just as the peach plums finish so there is lots of work for the bees.
And after months of very slow – almost stagnant – growth, our outdoor garden bed lettuce and kale is also starting to explode. We’ve been eating salad from the garden three times a week all winter but now we’ll have to up that pace. The ground is still cold and wet but with a little loving care we were able to transplant the lettuce from our hothouse into the garden so we can prepare the hothouse for our tomatoes. We have a new strategy for growing tomatoes so keep an eye on our “Overview” page.
