So we still love a cup of coffee in the morning. We brew it fresh the old fashioned way with a Melita filter. We savor it with fresh raisin toast (click here for the Raisin Bread recipe) topped with cinnamon, plum spread and/or peanut butter while cozied up in our book nook, planning our day.
The thing is that coffee can get expensive. And while we do our best to buy fair trade organic it’s still a challenge to make sure it’s sustainable. So we explored alternatives and after much experimentation and sampling landed on this solution:
Roasted Chick Peas
Canada grows over 300,000 tonnes of Chickpeas each year and it feels good to support our Saskatchewan farmers, even just a little bit. We roast them in the oven at 375F for about an hour until they are good and brown. Then grind or mill them into a course powder and mix them 50/50 with our organic coffee.
The resulting brew tastes milder but has more body than straight coffee. It also has less caffeine, which we appreciate. And it’s at least partially made in our Town Lot Farm kitchen.
Enjoy!
